Abstract

This article examines modern approaches to managing volunteer motivation and retention in non - profit organizations. The relevance of this topic is driven by increasing competition for volunteer attention and the need to build sustainable volunteer communities. The article analyzes the application of self - determination theory to understand the underlying mechanisms of intrinsic motivation, such as the need for autonomy, competence, and social connectedness. Particular attention is paid to the prevention of emotional burnout through the implementation of psychological support and supervision practices. A typology of organizational models of volunteer activity (hierarchical, community - oriented, project - based) and the corresponding types of volunteers is presented. The need for flexible management that takes into account the volunteer lifecycle is substantiated, and the effectiveness of recognition and engagement strategies as key retention factors is demonstrated. It is concluded that modern management in non - profit organizations should be aimed at creating a supportive ecosystem that facilitates the realization of volunteers' personal potential.
